Understanding ESG Skills: What Professionals Need to Know

The transition towards a more sustainable and resilient European economy requires new competences, new mindsets and new professional skills. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles are increasingly shaping business practices, regulatory frameworks and investment decisions across Europe.

However, despite their growing relevance, ESG skills remain insufficiently developed, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and vocational education and training (VET) professionals.

The challenge

Many organisations struggle to translate ESG principles into concrete actions. Limited access to structured training, lack of practical tools and fragmented knowledge often prevent professionals and SMEs from fully integrating sustainability and responsibility into their daily operations.

This skills gap represents a significant barrier to innovation, competitiveness and long-term sustainability.

The ESG Essentials project

ESG Essentials is an Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnership project in the field of Vocational Education and Training (KA220-VET) that aims to address this challenge by strengthening ESG-related skills across Europe.

The project focuses on:

  • expanding ESG knowledge beyond large corporations to SMEs and micro-enterprises,
  • supporting professionals, trainers and VET organisations in developing ESG competences,
  • promoting a practical and holistic approach to sustainability that integrates environmental, social and governance dimensions.

What the project delivers

Through a transnational and multidisciplinary approach, ESG Essentials develops:

  • a comprehensive ESG training curriculum,
  • an implementation framework tailored to organisational needs,
  • a digital learning platform hosting open and accessible training resources.

These results are designed to help professionals understand how to apply ESG principles in real business contexts, improving decision-making, governance, sustainability performance and long-term value creation.

Expected impact

By strengthening ESG skills, the project contributes to:

  • increased awareness and adoption of ESG practices among SMEs,
  • enhanced capacity of VET trainers and organisations,
  • improved sustainability, transparency and social responsibility in business activities,
  • alignment with European priorities on climate action, skills development and sustainable growth.

Towards a sustainable Europe

By investing in ESG skills, ESG Essentials supports professionals and organisations in navigating current and future challenges, while contributing to the broader European objective of building a sustainable, inclusive and competitive economy.
